SAMRC aims to promote the improvement of the health and quality of life of the population of South Africa through research, development and technology transfer. The scope of the research activity of SAMRC is basic laboratory investigations, clinical research and public health studies. Research focuses on the ten highest causes of mortality in South Africa, including TB, HIV, chronic diseases, alcohol, drug abuse and women’s health. With a strategic objective to help strengthen the health systems of the country in line with that of the Department of Health, SAMRC constantly identifies the main causes of death in South Africa.
