Speaker Bios:

Prof Helen Schneider, MBChB, MMed, PhD  is a public health specialist and health systems and policy researcher who has worked for more than 25 years on South Africa’s health system. She joined the School of Public Health at the University of the Western Cape in 2011 and was its Director from 2013  to 2016. Since 2015, she has also been the director of the UWC/MRC Health Services to Systems Research Unit, and in 2016 was awarded a South African Research Chair (SARChI) in Health Systems Governance.  Helen’s research and policy interests have included an understanding of the political dynamics of AIDS policy in South Africa and the health system-wide implications of programmatic interventions such as ARV scale-up;  the implementation of South Africa’s Ward Based Outreach Team Strategy; governance and leadership of national community health worker programmes; approaches to district health system strengthening and governance; and more recently, the governance of intersectoral action for health. Dr. Irene Agyepong is a public health physician who worked for several decades in Public Health Practice and Leadership as well as research in the Ghana Health Service including as Regional Director of Health for the Greater Accra region of Ghana which includes the Accra metropolis before retiring in 2020. She is a foundation fellow of the Public Health Faculty (PHF) of the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons and coordinates the Health Policy, Management and Leadership membership and fellowship training track in the PHF. She is currently the CEO of the Research program consortium (RPC) Community-led Responsive and Effective Urban health systems (CHORUS) funded by UK FCDO.  Her research and publications are in the field of Health Policy and Systems Research.  Apart from CHORUS she is engaged in other research evidence generation, capacity building and uptake efforts in West Africa Dr. Anond Kulthanmanusorn is a medical doctor and public health specialist with four years of experience working in district hospitals in a rural province of Thailand. He recently graduated with a Master’s degree in public health from King’s College London where he worked on issues of inequities of healthcare utilization in Thailand. His current position is a research fellow in health policy and systems at the International Health Policy Program, a research institute under the Ministry of Public Health.   Anond’s work focuses on primary health care in urban settings, universal health coverage, health equity, and access to health service.
