ARUA is a network of sixteen leading research universities of the Region that strive to expand and enhance the quality of research done in Africa by African researchers. The Alliance intends to develop local research and academic excellence throughout Africa by developing strong and viable research universities. Moreover, ARUA seeks collaboration to find solutions to the development problems of the region. The research themes in the area of natural sciences focus on: climate change; food security; non-communicable diseases; materials development and nanotechnology; energy and water conservation. In the social sciences and humanities field, research undertaken include: poverty & inequality; good governance; urbanization and habitable cities; unemployment; and skills development.
