Introduction to Primary Health care Course

The International Institute for Primary Health Care – Ethiopia (IPHC-E), along with technical assistance from leading primary health care (PHC) experts in Ethiopia and Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (JHSPH), have created this global PHC course that focuses on developing or adapting PHC programmes in LMIC countries.

About the course

This course examines the experiences of creating a Resilient PHC System from Covid-19 response lessons from Ethiopia and other countries. It is prepared by the International Institute for Primary Health Care – Ethiopia in collaboration with Johns Hopkins School of Public Health and Ethiopian Ministry of Health.

The Course has 4 modules that will provide participants with the history and evolution of primary healthcare and dive into the principles, operational organization, and strategies of primary health care using the WHO Primary health care levers. The course will utilize real-world case examples comparing several primary healthcare systems and explore the current challenges and opportunities for PHC strengthening to help participants apply these lessons within their own context.

Course objectives

By the end of this course students will be able to:

  1. Explain the current primary health care approaches and levers
  2. Explore challenges and opportunities in building and strengthening national primary health care systems
  3. Compare primary health care experiences of countries and contextualize the lessons learnt
Is this course right for you?

The majority of the content is delivered to you through self-paced online learning modules, in which you can learn at your own pace, followed by virtual discussions with experts and leaders from Ethiopia and other countries.  



In this course, you are expected to commit 8 – 12 hours (3 hours/week). It is a self-paced course in which you can learn at your own pace.





This course is intended for health professionals working in the health sector in Low and Middle income Countries.

Module 1: History, Evolution, and Importance of Primary Health Care
Focus on introducing participants to the historic evolution of aid effectiveness globally and in the Ethiopian and other countries health system context.
Module 2: PHC, Health System Building Blocks and Current PHC Approach
Describe the concept of PHC, WHO Health system building blocks, current PHC approach, the 14 levers in PHC and the results it may bring.
Module 3: Opportunities, challenges, and future recommendations in PHC
Discuss the current challenges and opportunities in building and strengthening national primary healthcare systems.
Module 4: Practical Experience in PHC
Explore the PHC experiences of selected countries, explore the current challenges and opportunities for PHC strengthening to help you apply these lessons in your own context.
